Matsuri(Festival) Matsuri(Festival)

Matsuri is originally held to pray for health and a rich harvest.
You can enjoy food stalls and also see hikiyama(floats)

Otsu Festival

The beginning of October (The dates vary depending on the year.)
Two days-Yoimiya(The eve of the festival) and Hon-matsuri (Official Festival)


The main attraction is 13 hikiyama (floats).
In Yoimiya, you can enjoy the musical performance of "Ohayashi" which is played on Japanese flues and drums.
In Hon-matsuri, 13 floats parade around the Otsu station.(9:30-17:30)
A moving doll called 'Karakuri' is on the floats.You can see it move depending on the time and place.
There are stalls in the precincts of Tenson-jinja.

Access: 10 minute walk from JR Otsu station.



Sanno Festival

Date: 12nd-15th April
Place: Hiyoshi Taisha

The highlight is "Yoimiya-otoshi" on the 14th of April.
4 mikoshi(portable shrines) run up from the bottom of the mountain to the top where the main hall of Hiyoshi Taisha is. This scene is very valiant.
Stalls are seen on the approach to Hiyoshi Taisha.
If cherry blossoms bloom in this period, you will be able to enjoy cherry blossoms as well as the festival.

      10 minute walk from Sakamoto station (Keihan railway, Ishiyama-sakamoto line)



Senko Festival

Date: 17th July
Place: from Takebe Taisha to the River Seta
Time:Evening onwards

2 mikoshi parade from Takebe Taisha to the River Seta.
After getting to the River Seta, mikoshi are carried on boats and go up and down the river.
Many stalls can be seen around the river bank.
Fireworks displays are held at night.

      20 minute walk or 5 minute by bus from JR Ishiyama station)





Sakura(Cherry blossoms) Sakura (Cherry blossoms)

In April, cherry blossoms bloom everywhere in Japan.
Otsu has a lot of places to see beautiful cherry blossoms.
Cherry blossoms are lit up during the night at some places.
Cherry blossoms fall only one week after they bloom.


Lake Biwa Sosui (Mii-dera)

There are about 1000 cherry blossom trees. Those of Mii-dera and Lake Biwa Sosui are lit up at night.
(Lights are turned on between 18:30-21:30) During this period, admission is free.

Entrance fee: 500 yen (adult)

Nagara Park

There are about 900 cherry blossoms trees in the area. The park is very large, so there are scenic walking routes around the park.

Zeze Park (Sakura Festival)

Zeze Sakura Festival is held on one day and is associated with the bloom of cherry blossoms at the beginning of April. (The date varies depending on the year.)
Stalls and flea markets can be seen in the park.
You can eat food from the stalls under the trees, so you can enjoy viewing the flowers while tasting Japanese cuisine.

In October, leaves in the mountains begin to turn red.
In Otsu, you can see maple leaves and ginkgo begin to change colour
If you go to the temples, you can see beautiful autumn leaves.
At some places, autumn leaves are lit up at night.


Ishiyama Temple

Ishiyama temple is famous for being the temple of flowers.
You can enjoy not only the autumn leaves, but also various kinds of flowers such as cherry blossoms and plums, depending on the season

Saikyo Temple

About 3000 trees change colour in autumn.
Trees are lit up nightly from 10th to 30th November (17:30 – 21:00)

Fireworks displays are held everywhere in Japan during summer.
You can watch fireworks around Lake Biwa and the bank of the lake and river in Otsu.
Fireworks are reflected in the lake and this is very beautiful and mysterious.


Lake Biwa Fireworks Festival

This is the biggest fireworks festival in Otsu and about 300 thousand people visit the festival.
About 10 thousand bursts of fireworks are launched into the air.
You can see various kinds of fireworks ranging from huge fireworks to heart-shaped and cat-shaped fireworks.
Fireworks can be seen in a wide range of places such as near Lake Biwa around Port Otsu and Nagisa Park.

Access: 15 minutes walk from Otsu station or Zeze station (JR Biwako line)
     5 minutes walk from Hama-otsu station (Keihan railway Ishiyama-sakamoto line)
     10 minutes walk from Otsu-kyo station (JR Kosei line) Oujiyama athletic park, Oujiyama athletics stadium etc.


River Seta Fireworks Festival

Date:17th July
20:30 – 21:00
(Fireworks start around when mikoshi boats from Senko Festival land.)
Place:River Seta (around Ishiyama and Karahashi)
Collaboration with Senko Festival.


The number of fireworks launched into the air is about 1200. This is not a really big figure, but you can see the dynamic fireworks very closely from the bank of River Seta.
Many stalls are open around the bank of the river.
